Dr. John M. Coulson, 86, a native Philadelphian and a longtime resident of Bethany Beach, Del., and Silver Spring, Md., died on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017, in Asheville, N.C.
He was a graduate of La Salle University, earned doctorate from University of Pennsylvania in 1963 and had a distinguished career in research and education. He retired after 25 years as project officer for the U.S. Department of Education.
Outside of work, he enjoyed witty conversations with friends and family, year-round gardening, extensive reading, classical music and foreign cars. He had no digital footprint and saw no need to surf the Web, and yet many people would say Coulson was the most informed, intelligent and well-read man they knew.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dr. Katherine R. Coulson; their children, Dr. Carol Coulson, M.D., and her husband, Robert Brewster, the Hon. J. Mark Coulson and his wife, Patricia Flowers, and consultant Marirose Coulson Ziebarth and her husband, David Ziebarth; and five grandchildren, Alex, Madden and Mollie Brewster, and Peter and Will Coulson.
Memorial services will be held in Silver Spring, Md., and Bethany Beach, Del., at a later date. Condolences may be sent to 400 Wesley Dr. #258; Asheville, NC 28803.
