Talivaldis “Valdis” Berzins, 89, of Ocean View, died peacefully at Milford’s Delaware Hospice on Monday, Nov. 6.
He was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1928. During World War II, at the age of 16, Valdis, his parents and his brother had to flee Latvia for safety. They eventually found a new home in America, where Valdis worked hard to provide for his family. He was able to save up to buy land, which he and his family farmed for several years. He later became a succesful builder and land developer, and was the founder of Ocean Way Estates.
He is survived by two sons, Raymond Berzins, of Ocean View, and Sigurd Berzins and his wife, Susan, of Frankford; four grandchildren; his brother, Modris Berzins and his wife, Nancy, of Ocean View; one nephew, two nieces, and his loving partner of 45 years, Marita Snore. Valdis is preceded in death by his wife, Gaida, and his parents, Rudolfs and Milda Berzins.
A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, Nov. 20, at Melson’s Funeral Home in Ocean View. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.; service will begin at 11 a.m. Private interment will follow at Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church.
