Candidates for Sussex County Council District 5 Ellen Magee and John Rieley will field questions from the audience at a public forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Sussex County on Thursday, Oct. 25, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Laurel Public Library, 101 4th Street, Laurel.
Magee, a Democrat, and John Rieley, a Republican, are vying for the seat vacated by Rob Arlett, representing southern Sussex County, extending from the Maryland line to the Atlantic Ocean and including the communities of Dagsboro, Delmar, Fenwick Island, Frankford, Laurel, Millville, Millsboro, Selbyville and South Bethany.
The responsibilities of the county council include establishing policies for the health, safety and welfare of county residents, adopting an annual budget for county government operations, and enacting plans for county growth, development and employment.
Both candidates have posted background information and their answers to questions on key issues on www.VOTE411.org, the League of Women Voters’ online voters’ guide. Questions posed to the candidates on the website focus on their priorities for the county, as well as their views on protecting and improving water quality, working with DelDOT on traffic issues, addressing sea-level rise and communicating with constituents.
Following brief opening statements by the candidates, the Oct. 25 forum will be devoted to written questions from the floor. The audience can pick up notecards and pencils for posing questions at the entry door or from monitors in the aisles throughout the program.
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 election is Oct. 13. For more information on voting in Delaware, go to VOTE 411.org, sussexlwv.org or ivote.de.gov.
