This year is the 30th anniversary of the CROP Hunger Walk in Bethany Beach, sponsored by the Southeast Sussex Ministerium This year’s walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Bethany Beach bandstand, with sign-in at noon and the walk at 1:15.
The CROP (Communiities Responding to Overcome Proverty) Hunger Walk provides an opportunity for the community to support six local food pantries, as well as provide funds for communities in Indonesia that are recovering from recent earthquakes. Walkers and donors are being recruited through Oct. 14.
T-shirts with Crop Walk sponsors’ names on the back will be sold for $10. This year, all proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts will go directly to six local food pantries in southeast Sussex County.
Most of the walker donations go to Church World Service (CWS) — in existence since 1969 — for recovery aid to the people of Indonesia who were victims of recent earthquakes. CWS does not provide money — they provide the tools, materials and training to harvest crops to feed families and to start small businesses to have a sustainable food source and income to live.
And 25 percent of donations to CWS will be returned to the Southeast Sussex County community for local food needs.
“We know that our local food pantries see eight to 10 families every week that need food in order to feed their families, save money for other bills and supplement the minimum wages that they receive, without any benefits,” organizers said.
People can sign up as a walker or donor or purchase T-Shirts at any of the congregations that are part of the Ministerium or come to the Bethany Beach boardwalk on Sunday, Oct. 14, and support the CROP Hunger Walk.
Those who choose not to walk but support the walkers should come to the bandstand at noon. Entertainment will be provided by the Nautical Sounds and St. Ann’s Contemporary Music Ensemble.
