IR boys’ soccer open with ‘W’ in Upstate-Downstate Challenge
For the second straight year, the Indian River High School boys’ soccer team opened its season with a shutout victory in the Upstate-Downstate Challenge over Newark.
This time, however, it was a 3-0 decision over the Yellow Jackets at Dover High School.
Junior Jared Cordoba got the Indians on the board first on Sept. 8, off an assist from classmate Alex DiLuzio, to make it 1-0. DiLuzio again was the helper on the Indians’ second goal, with Omar Baker putting the biscuit in the basket.
The Indians added their final goal of the contest in the second half, off the foot of Tony Velasquez, with an assist from Yves Graf.
IR held a decided advantage in shots at 16-6, and registered more corner-kick opportunities as well (9-6).
Senior goalie Zach Neal made four saves to pick up the shutout win.
IR’s game with Cape Henlopen on Tuesday, Sept. 11, was postponed. The Indians were set to meet up with Woodbridge on Thursday, Sept. 13, after Coastal Point press time. For the score and highlights from the game, check out the Coastal Point sports Facebook and Twitter pages.
