John Gilbert ‘Jack’ Barrett, 79

John Gilbert “Jack” Barrett, 79, of Berlin, Md., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018, at his home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he spent his early childhood in Richmond and Roanoke, Va., and in Baltimore, Md.

Barrett moved to Berlin with his family in 1951, when his father, Charles Gilbert Barrett, purchased the Berlin Chevrolet dealership and renamed it Barrett Chevrolet.

Barrett was a 1956 Stephen Decatur High School graduate and member of the National Honor Society. He attended University of Maryland and was president of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He enjoyed his college summers in Ocean City, Md., running the Phillips Beach Plaza beach stand. In the fall of 1958, looking to see the world, he took a transatlantic voyage to Europe.

Thereafter, he dedicated over 43 years of his life to the family business, Barrett Chevrolet, alongside of his father and his brother, Jim. A highlight was their national Chevrolet Service Supremacy Award for exceptional customer service during the 1970s and 1980s.

Barrett was always community-minded. He initiated and was the founding president of the Berlin-Ocean City Jaycees; president of the Berlin Lions Club; Finance Committee member of Holy Savior and Saint Mary’s Parish Church; a member of the Knights of Columbus; and a board member of Worcester County GOLD. His heart and spirit were always vested in serving and supporting others, many deeds unknown. In addition, for many years he was a Peninsula Bank board director.

Barrett enjoyed fishing with friends and family, and was an avid Baltimore Colts and Baltimore Ravens fan, a daily follower of the stock market and coin collector. He took pleasure in the occasional dinner at the horse track. In his later years, Barrett especially loved his family vacations with his wife, children and grandchildren, as well as time with his precious dog, Rosie.

Barrett was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Gilbert Barrett and Regina Moroney Barrett, and two siblings, Eileen Vilkas and James “Jim” Barrett. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Jacobs; his three adored children with Christie Williams: Karen Ray Barrett Clayland of Berlin, Charles David Barrett of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and William Gilbert Barrett and his wife, Jennifer, of San Francisco, Calif.; six grandchildren, Kevin, Jacob, Katherine, Zachary, Siena and Jameson; a great-grandson, Kayden; his beloved sisters and their husbands, Elizabeth “Betsy” Ludlam and her husband, Richard, and Jeanne Hamilton and her husband, Clark; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was to be held Aug. 20, 2018, with visitation at Holy Savior Church in Ocean City, Md. Internment and reception were to be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Worcester County GOLD; P.O. Box 39; Snow Hill, MD 21863 (email worcestercountygold@gmail.com) or a charity of the giver’s choice. Arrangements were by Holloway Funeral Home, P.A. Salisbury, Md., through which condolences may be sent online, at www.hollowayfh.com.
