Carolyn M. Brunner, 93, of Newark, Del., passed away on Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, at Christiana Care Health Systems. She was born in East Lansdowne, Pa., on Dec. 28, 1924, and raised in Sussex County, Del., daughter of the late William E. Powell and Sadie W. Powell.
Brunner trained as a nurse at Delaware Hospital in Wilmington during World War II; was a school nurse at John M. Clayton High School; and then moved to Newark. She later earned her bachelor’s degree as a registered nurse at Wilmington College. She retired from a 20-plus-year career as school nurse at Downes Elementary School in Newark.
Brunner was a longtime member and volunteer at the Newark Welfare Committee and a member of the Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed playing the piano and leading many singalong events throughout her adult life. She also enjoyed reading and was active in her neighborhood bridge club.
More than anything, she cherished the time spent with her family — especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Brunner was a loving and devoted wife, mother and friend.
In addition to her parents, Brunner was preceded in death by her two husbands, Harry W. McCann, in 1949, and H. Richard Brunner, in 1999; and her daughter, Rebecca McCann, in 1999. She is survived by her sons, Daniel McCann of Newark, James Brunner of Bluffton, S.C., and Gerald Brunner of Newark; her six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were to be announced later at a later date, with arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Ocean View, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial donations to the Ocean View Historical Society; P.O. Box 576; Ocean View, DE 19970. Condolences may be sent online at www.parsellfuneralhomes.com.
