Anthony D. “Tony” Mattox, 81, of West Fenwick Island, Del., passed peacefully on Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, at home, surrounded by family. He was born in Baltimore, Md., on Dec. 9, 1936, son of the late Baldwin and Alice Mattox.
Mattox graduated from St. Alphonsus Catholic School, Baltimore Polytechnic High School and the University of Maryland—College Park, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for many years in the aerospace industry and retired in 1997 as vice president of business development for Atlantic Research Corporation in Gainesville, Va.
He was an avid bridge player and fisherman (when the cards were good and the fish were biting!). He presided over numerous boards, and community and condo associations. Above all, his quick wit, easy laugh and love of good food touched the many people who loved him.
Mattox is survived by his wife of 60-plus years, Beverly; two daughters, Leanne Ruark and her husband, Gary, of Eden, Md., and Leslie Knopfler and her husband, Dave, of Grandy, N.C.; a sister, Lorraine Weisengoff and her husband, Paul, of Ocean Pines, Md., and Tony’s nephews, Paul, Bob and John Weisengoff.
A funeral service was to be held Aug. 10, 2018, at Sound United Methodist Church in Williamsville, Del., with the Rev. John Schutt officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sound U.M. Church, Roof Fund, c/o Peggy Brasure; 35131 Lighthouse Rd.; Selbyville, DE 19975, or to Seasons Hospice; 220 Continental Dr., Ste. 407; Newark, DE 19713.
