Homeless Walk to raise funds for three area shelters

For the 12th year, the women of Faith United Methodist Church are working to raise awareness and funds to help the homeless population in Sussex County.

“It came about many years ago, when we had a discussion about walking for a cause in order to do something in the community,” said Christina Miller-Hall, who co-chairs the annual Walk for the Homeless. “The issue of homelessness was constantly growing. We thought, sometimes people don’t recognize it in the area we live in — the beach area. But it exists not only in our area, but many areas.”

This year’s walk will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at 9 a.m., beginning at Faith United Methodist Church. Check-in will run from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Pre-registration is not required, and the event has no registration fee.

“We just want people to come out, participate, and if they can raise funds, of course that’s great. Even if they’re not able to donate for this particular year, just the participation and supporting the cause is important to us as well.”

Monies raised from the walk will benefit Casa San Francisco/Catholic Charities, Crisis House and Home of the Brave.

“We wanted to help those shelters locally in Sussex County to raise funds to assist them in what they do,” said Miller-Hall. “For the last 11 years, Faith United Methodist Women, along with the help and support of many others, has raised a total of $59,345 to support three homeless shelters in Sussex County.”

While Miller-Hall said the walks draw an average of 75 to 100 participants each year, she noted that many feel moved to donate without participating, nor is donation required for people to participate.

“We just want people to come out and support the walk,” she said. “I don’t think there’s anyone who wants to be homeless, and we never know if someone we know might need to use those shelters, or even ourselves. We just feel it’s important to participate and let people know that we care.”

Faith United Methodist Church is located at 19940 Church Street in Rehoboth Beach. For more information, contact Miller-Hall at (302) 227-3118. Those who wish to donate to the Walk for the Homeless may send check donations to Faith United Methodist at that address, with “Walk for the Homeless” noted in the memo.
