(Editor’s note: This is the eighth in a series of previews of the homes that will be on display during the 27th Annual Beach & Bay Cottage Tour, to be held July 25-26, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

After spending the last 15 summers vacationing in Bethany Beach with their four kids, the owners of this home decided it was time to set down roots. They located an older mid-century cottage on a double lot within walking distance of the beach and, although it needed a major redo, they could see that it had great potential.

They loved the ground-floor rambler style with guest rooms upstairs, plus the added bonus of a backyard pool. Having already renovated four homes previously, the owner set to work, gutting the first floor to create an open central living area flanked by the master suite on one side and the kids’ bedrooms on the other.

The back of the home offers easy access to the spacious rear patio and pool, now the central focus of all family gatherings. The decor is designed to be relaxed and beachy, using soft tropical colors and fun accessories.

The result is a welcoming family retreat that captures the character and charm of an older cottage, reflects the artistry of the homeowner and serves as the anchor for the owners where they can all reconnect and relax. Thus the inscription upon entering the living room: “Beach Matters.”

This is one of the properties that will be open to those who purchase tickets for the 27th Annual Beach & Bay Cottage Tour. Volunteers are still needed to serve as hostesses and hosts in this year’s 10 tour homes. Those who can give some of their time on either one or both of the tour days are being asked to send an email to or call (302) 537-5828.

Tickets for the tour cost $30 and may be purchased at the South Coastal Library or through the Cottage Tour’s website at The Cottage Tour is sponsored by the Friends of the South Coastal Library, and proceeds directly benefit the library’s operations.
