Albert C. “Al” Hillegas, 81, of South Bethany, Del., formerly of Lanham, Md., passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at his home. He was born in Johnstown, Pa., on Nov. 13, 1936, son of the late Eugene Hillegas and Mary (Baka) Hillegas.
Hillegas was a 1954 graduate of Franklin High School in Johnstown and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1957. After his discharge, Hillegas began his career with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., retiring in 1983 with the rank of captain. He then owned and operated his own home-improvement business.
Hillegas also coached for several years at the Lanham Boys & Girls Club. He was an avid sports fan and loved spending time on the water fishing.
In additions to his parents, Hillegas was preceded in death by his wife, Donna L. Hillegas, in 2002, and a son, David Hillegas, in 2017. He is survived by five children, Daniel Hillegas of Lusby, Md., Cynthia O’Brien and her husband, George, of Silver Spring, Md., Matthew Hillegas and his wife, Maria, of Hanover, Pa., Michael Hillegas of Glen Burnie, Md., and Barbara Hillegas of Pasadena, Md.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Dennis Hillegas and his wife, Mary Ann, of Frankford, Del.; and his companion of 15 years, Pat Fox of South Bethany, Del.
A celebration of Hillegas’ life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, Del., where friends and family may call after 10 a.m. Interment will be held privately at a later date, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, Del.
