Memorial Day came and went last weekend, and most of us are back to our regular lives now. But some aren’t.
A 73-year-old Ocean View man died over the weekend when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle. An alleged drunk driver struck another vehicle near the Indian River Inlet and caused multiple injuries. Accidents appeared to be happening at Powell Farm and Burbage by the hour.
A day of sunshine, laughter and fun can turn to life-altering in a matter of moments, and it does here every year. And we haven’t even discussed the multiple incidents that happen in our shore break every year.
This is one of the most remarkable summer locales on the planet. We have beautiful beaches, thriving inland waterways and restaurants and shops that are far superior to most places of similar populations. That doesn’t even include the amazing produce that is all around us. But we have our dangers — both of the natural variety and man-made.
We want everyone who spends their time here to do so with giant smiles on their faces, and the sound of children playing filling the air around us. This is a fun area, plain and simple.
But pause. Take a second and remember that consequences are as real here as anyplace else. Take that extra second and survey your surroundings. It could save a life.
