June 8 golf tournament to benefit military families group

It’s time to tee it up, and take that best shot — all while helping a good cause.

The 2018 Salute to Heroes Open Golf Tournament will be held next Friday, June 8, at Bear Trap Dunes golf course in Ocean View. The event will benefit Operation Homefront programs designed to help “build strong, stable and secure military families.”

This year’s event is being hosted by the Col. D. Lyle Hohnstine Memorial Foundation, in honor of U.S. Army Col. D. Lyle Hohnstine. The tournament will feature 109 golfers and will have an 11 a.m. shotgun start.

The Bear Trap Dunes Golf Course has been named a “Best Course You Can Play” by GolfWeek and Top 100 Golf Shop in America. The 27-hole “strategic, masterpiece” of a course was designed by award-winning course architect Rick Jacobson and is operated by Troon Golf. It has three different 9-hole courses, featuring the Grizzly, Kodiak and Black Bear, and all three play as a Par 36. The course is located at 7 Clubhouse Drive in Ocean View.

Operation Homefront was founded in 2002 and is a national non-profit organization. Its mission is to help military families “so that they can thrive — not simply struggle to get by — in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.”

The organization has been recognized for its superior performance by leading independent charity oversight groups, as 92 percent of Operation Homefront expenditures go directly to programs that support tens of thousands of military families each year.

According to its website, Operation Homefront provides critical financial assistance, transitional and permanent housing, and family support services to prevent short-term needs from turning into chronic, long-term struggles. Their donors, and the support of thousands of volunteers nationwide, have allowed Operation Homefront to serve American military families across the country.
