Jean Andrea (Pigott) Roche, 77, of South Bethany, Del., passed away peacefully, at home, on Sunday, May 13, 2018, after a long battle with breast cancer. She was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Washington, D.C., the only child of Columbia M. “Dutch” (Brandenburg) Pigott and William M. Pigott.
Roche grew up in the District of Columbia and Kensington, Md. While in high school, she began her career at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, providing clerical support to the engineering staff. Years later, she met her husband of 55 years, Thomas L. Roche, also of Washington.
At JHU/APL she was employed in the Space Division, obtaining the position of administrative assistant, providing support on many satellite programs, both at the laboratory and during operations at the launch sites.
Roche prided herself as a homemaker while raising her children and enjoyed cake-decorating, gardening and all crafts. After she and her husband retired to the beach, she enjoyed traveling, quilting, knitting, scrapbooking and other crafts. She was a member of several local craft groups, including the Blue Hens and Chix with Stix and the South Bethany Women’s Group.
Roche is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Roche; her daughters, Andrea M. Barron-Hughes of Canton, Ga., and Karen M. Briggs and her husband, Albert “Gil” Briggs Jr., of Olney, Md.; and six grandchildren, Albert Briggs III, William “Billy” Briggs, Luke Briggs, Shelby Barron, Taylor Barron and Logan Bobo.
A celebration of Roche’s life will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018, at noon, and friends may call after 11 a.m., at Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, Del.
