The 3rd Annual Poseidon Festival will take place over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28. The Town of Bethany Beach will host four days of island-inspired entertainment at the bandstand and Bethany Beach Nature Center (807 Garfield Parkway) in an event designed to celebrate the sea while helping the community prepare for potential coastal emergencies.
The event kicks off on Friday, May 25, at 6 p.m. on the bandstand with the ska/reggae sounds of The Bullbuckers. Then, at dusk, the first movie of the summer entertainment season will be shown: “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the fifth installment of that series.
The event continues on Saturday, May 26. At 10:30 a.m., the Nature Center will host mermaid-themed activities and a book signing by Nancy Sakaduski, author of “The Mermaid in Rehoboth Bay.” Kids are being encouraged to dress as their favorite sea creature to get a prize.
From 5:30 to 9 p.m. on the bandstand plaza, there will be an “Emergency Meet-and-Greet” with local experts on how to prepare for a potential coastal emergency. Attendees can take a mini-tour of the Town’s Mobile Command Center and see a search-and-rescue (SAR) watercraft and a Ranger UTV up close. Lifeguards, police officers and emergency personnel will be on hand to discuss ocean safety and distribute helpful handouts.
At 6 p.m., Trinidad North will perform steel music on the bandstand, followed by Jimmy Buffett tribute band Parrotbeach at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday. May 27, at 1 p.m., the bandstand will host the inaugural Bethany Beach Hermit Crab Derby. Festivalgoers can choose a crab to race or just watch the fun play out in the event run by the National Crab Racing Association and backed by Florida Marine Research. The U.S. Navy Cruisers Band will finish out the day with a performance at 7:30 p.m.
On Monday, The VFW Post 7234 will conduct a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. on the bandstand. Steel drum duo Island Fusion will close the festival from 2 to 4 p.m. and set the stage for another summer season in Bethany Beach!
