School may be out, but the soccer season is just gearing up for the River Soccer Club in Roxana. Tryouts will be held this weekend for a wide range of teams, for both boys and girls, ages 6 to 18, as young athletes strap on their cleats, slip on their shin guards and take to the pitch.
Girls U9 (younger than 9) through U16 will be able to try out on Saturday, July 21, with designated times for specific teams. Boys can tryout for U9 through U18 teams on that same Saturday, with the U14 and U15 tryouts later in July. In all, River Soccer Club will be fielding 11 competitive teams this year, including two new boys’ teams.
River Soccer Director of Coaching Steve Kilby is looking forward to the turnout this weekend. “When I got involved five years ago,” he said, “we only had four competitive teams. We’re seeing a lot more kids coming out since then, and we have a lot more opportunities for them. We’re at the point where we just continue to grow. Now, we’re fielding 11 teams, and each year we’re trying to add a new layer of U9 teams.”
Kilby estimated that 200-some soccer players will be out on the fields, vying for a position on the teams this year. All tryouts will be held at the River Soccer Complex on Gum Road in Roxana. Players should register 30 minutes prior to the start of their assigned tryouts, be prepared to play, and bring water and a ball.
“We’ve really been able to form a kind of evolution out of the sport here in Sussex, County,” said Kilby, who has been active coaching Indian River’s boys’ and girls’ teams in years past. “We’ve been able to lure more kids out to the fields to play. We’re growing slowly but surely. It’s a steady pace for us. The majority of our expansion is in recreational and youth programs, so it’s good to get these kids involved young. They’re coming out and having a good time and learning a lot.”
This month also marks the third summer that the River Soccer Club will be sending a local team to Europe to play. The U13 Rapids boys’ team will be traveling to Italy, leaving June 23.
In addition to tryouts for the club teams, the River Soccer Club will once again be holding their youth camps, starting June 23 and running through June 27. Kinder Camp, for ages 5 through 7, will run from 5:30 p.m. through 7:30 p.m. Youth camp for ages 8 through 14 will run from 8:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. on the same dates. A $20 non-refundable down payment is required to reserve a spot at tryouts, and enrollment is limited.
Advanced players looking to improve techniques and tactics may consider the advanced KYK camp, which runs for five days, beginning Monday, July 14. Ages for the KYK camp range from 9 to 16.
