Just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, a young boy on a bicycle was struck by a automobile along the northbound lane of Coastal Highway near Ninth Street.
South Bethany Police Officer Eric Watkins was flagged over by a pedestrian after the accident. The young boy was bicycling with several others, including his sister, when he struck the side of a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, noted Watkins. Watkins said the juvenile was likely between the ages of 8 and 10 years old.
“It looks like [the boy] may have accidentally veered into traffic,” Watkins said. “There was very little damage done to the car, but anytime you have a bike versus a car, it’s not going to take much for someone on a bike to be hurt.”
The boy was wearing a helmet at the time but his injuries appeared to be serious. He was flown to Shock Trauma at Johns Hopkins Hospital by a state police helicopter. His condition was not available at Coastal Point press time.
