There is no shortage of real estate attorneys at the beach. People are covered for wills and estates. But what about for other legal matters?
That is a question that Susan (Weidman) Gardner has thought a lot about. For the past four years, since she started her own practice in Millville, she has received constant requests and questions about other legal matters but — because real estate, wills and estates are her specialty — she would have to refer people away. Not anymore.
Meaghan K. Mahoney, a general civil attorney, started with the firm in September and has hit the ground running.
“She’s really going to be able to provide a service that the community is lacking,” said Gardner. “She’s going to fill that void.”
Mahoney hails from Albany, N.Y., and is a graduate of Roger Williams Law School. She said she knew she wanted to go on after getting her undergraduate degree in psychology; and, after some professors said she should look into law, she did just that. She met her fiancé (who is also a lawyer) in law school and moved down to Sussex County in August of last year.
Before starting with Weidman, she clerked in Family Court on Georgetown – something she said was a “good transition” from school to practice. She clerked for three judges for various family matters, such as divorce, custody and child-support issues. She will be able to provide services related to divorce, personal injury, landlord/tenant disputes and incorporations, and will be trained in real estate, wills and estates, as well.
Mahoney said she is looking forward to working with people and assisting them through life’s transitional times and that she enjoys the satisfaction she gets from helping people.
“I hope to build up a strong clientele here,” said Mahoney, “and provide people with a service. I like helping people. And people are genuine and appreciate the help, just like we appreciate them.”
Mahoney will be based in Millville but will be able to see clients in the Millsboro office as well.
“It’s good, because now we really can be two places at once,” she said of signing on with Gardner. “With all the business she was referring away, it’ll be nice to be able to provide those services here.”
