McCabe's open for the season

As warm weather begins to creep back into the area, local businesses are preparing for the coming season and shops that have been closed for the winter are beginning to open their doors once again. In South Bethany, McCabe’s Gourmet Market is back in business; and the friendly crew inside are happy to get back to work offering a selection of fresh baked treats and sandwiches.

Rebecca and Richard Mais, owners of McCabe’s, opened their doors for their 24th season on March 18.

“Not much has changed,” said Richard Mais, “although we have expanded our barbecue section. We’ll be closed on Mondays through Memorial Day, at which point we’ll be open seven days a week. For now, we’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sundays from 7 to 4.”

McCabe’s offers a wide variety of fresh baked muffins, bagels, croissants and pastries, coffee and espresso, kitchen and cooking accessories and Krups coffee products, as well as a hodgepodge of gourmet and gift items.

“The chicken salad and the homemade salads and chili are definitely our best sellers,” noted Susan Horvath, a.k.a. “Q,” one of the employees helping to make McCabe’s such a friendly place. “We’ve got a wonderful crew, who are all back for another year and ready to serve and entertain. Of course, there’s no charge for the entertainment!”

Whether visitors are looking to grab a quick bite on the run or to relax for a few minutes, McCabe’s is ready to accommodate. McCabe’s offers seating both indoors and outside on their patio, overlooking the lonely watchtower at the south end of South Bethany.

Horvath, along with co-workers Stacey Harmon, Karen Hale, Dianne Stong and Jackie Seth, are quick to whip up any of the numerous sandwich or salad specials, all prepared to order. If residents or visitors are throwing a party or having a meeting, they can also help them put together a gourmet party tray using their wide selection of pastries and breads, deli products and imported cheeses.

The eclectic menu offers a number of items that aren’t often seen on a sandwich menu, such as prosciutto, chicken-walnut salad, alfalfa sprouts, avocado and brie cheese. For the more traditional palate, they also offer the classics, such as baked ham, roast turkey, fresh tuna and shrimp salads, or roast beef. For the salad folks, they offer their Greek salad, with crumbled feta cheese, calamata olives, fresh cucumber and tomato; or the salad sampler, with a choice of tuna, turkey tarragon, shrimp or chicken walnut salads. There’s certainly something for everyone!

“We really love that we have such friendly, wonderful customers that keep coming back year after year,” said Hale. “That’s the best part about this job. We love the small town, and knowing the faces that walk through the door.”
