Annual wine-tasting to benefit RSK Foundation

This weekend, the Clubhouse at Bear Trap Dunes in Ocean View will host the Fourth Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction, benefitting the Ryan Scott Kappes (RSK) Foundation. For $50, guests can sample some of the best wines on the market, enjoy the food and hear some tunes, all serving a great cause.

Ryan Scott Kappes, born to Karie and Scott Kappes on Nov. 19, 2005, suffered from a congenital heart defect that took his life only 10 weeks later. During their son’s hospitalization, Karie and Scott spent every available moment by his side.

Shortly after losing their son, the couple and their family began the RSK Foundation, aimed at providing financial assistance to families of critically ill children so that the family can remain together during extended hospitalizations. The foundation supplies grants to help with travel, lodging and living expenses for qualified participants and thus far has given assistance to more than 60 families nationwide, stretching from Delaware to Hawaii.

“The annual wine-tasting and silent auction has always been a big success for us,” said Scott Kappes’ brother, Mike Kappes, co-owner of Beach Liquors in Bethany. Along with the wine-tasting event, an autumn golf tournament pulls in most of the donations given to the RSK Foundation each year.

This Saturday’s event will feature extravagant wines, such as Opus One, Beringer Private Reserve, Silver Oak, Pride, Shafer and more.

“There are some great $150 and $200 bottles of wine that we’ll feature,” noted Mike Kappes. “We want to bring big wines that many people may not otherwise have the opportunity to try.” Food from Difebo’s Bistro on the Green will also be served. Guests will be able to enjoy live entertainment, as well.

Local businesses have chipped in towards the charity and this year’s event, as well.

“The Cottage Cafe is a big sponsor this year,” said Mike Kappes, “and has really helped us a lot in the past.”

Over the years, he added, the wine-tastings have had a tremendous impact in getting information on the foundation out in the community.

“The word is spreading,” he said, “and our events are getting bigger and bigger.”

The wine-tasting and silent auction will be held on Saturday, May 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Clubhouse at Bear Trap Dunes, located along Central Avenue in Ocean View.
