Ellen Rice Gallery to welcome summer

This summer, local art sensation Ellen Rice is celebrating the success of her gallery in Ocean View, a staple in the local art scene for over the past decade, and this coming Wednesday, July 1, she’s welcoming customers, old and new, as well as the general public, to commemorate the season. From 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Ellen Rice will be hosting a “Welcome Summer Anniversary Party,” complete with catered food, a wine tasting and live entertainment.

Ellen Rice works on ‘Back Bay Borealis,’ a painting she will be featuring at her ‘Welcome Summer Anniversary Party’ on Wednesday, July 1.

Guests are welcome to stop by and peruse the gallery, which features Rice’s one-of-a-kind works, as well as hand-made crafts from a variety of other artists. Rice will be introducing her oil painting, “Bethany Breakers,” depicting the rolling waves along the Delaware beach. In addition, she will present other new pieces that have been in the works, including a painting of a sunset over the back-bay area, an oil piece titled “Moonlight,” of the waves crashing under a midnight glow and a pastel titled “Now,” rendering the moon peeking through the clouds, with the beach’s dunes in the foreground.

“I have a few pieces that I will be debuting,” she noted this week.

Most of her works revolve around her fascination of the Mid-Atlantic region, from the scenic bays and watersheds to the coastline. She has also expanded her recent series, “The Strength of Woman,” which captures portraits that embody messages of hope, light and encouragement. She has incorporated her artwork onto bookmarks and nightlights, which have become popular sellers at her gallery.

Local singer-songwriter John Pollard will offer soothing sounds throughout Wednesday evening’s event. He will feature songs off his second solo album, “My Bethany,” and from his newest CD, “Nothing Personal,” and requests from guests, as well.

“People can bring folding chairs and enjoy the music,” said Rice. “They can tap their feet or sway with the rhythm. We’ve had people dancing on the porch at past events, and that’s really fun to see.”

Pollard has performed at previous events held by Rice, including her “Hope” event earlier this year, which raised funds for the Justin W. Jennings Foundation and Justin’s Beach House.

Guests at the July 1 event can also try their chance at Ellen Rice’s “10 Years of Art, 10 Weeks of Prizes” drawing, in which customers who purchase $20 or more at the gallery are entered to win free prizes. Winners are selected every Wednesday.

“We’ve had two winners so far,” said Rice. “Our recent winner won a print of their choice, up to $300 in value, and another winner picked up a nightlight featuring my painting ‘Dancing Grasses.’ [This coming] winner will win a beautiful glass sculpture of an angel.”

The evening celebration, scheduled rain or shine, inside and outside the gallery, gives Rice an opportunity to take some time away from her studio and interact with her friends and fans. Though her gallery has been open for 10 years now, art has been a big part of her life for almost four decades.

“The most importing thing I’ve learned in these 10 years,” she said, “is you have to stay true to yourself and paint what’s in your heart. That’s what people respond to.”
