Gym raising money for breast cancer research

People interested in starting their New Year’s resolutions early, or those interested in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month while getting fit for month, can join World Gym in Millsboro for $30 for the month of October. Owner Pam Trader said the gym will also be receiving their two new pink treadmills on Oct. 1 and, for each mile logged on the treadmills, CYBEX, the treadmills’ manufacturer, will donate 10 cents to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“Most of our equipment is by CYBEX,” said Trader, explaining that they had this special promotion available for gyms to purchase the equipment to jumpstart their fundraising. “And they’ll be pink all year,” she added, laughing.

Trader said the gym has members who are both advocates for breast cancer research and breast cancer survivors, so it was important for them to do something collectively. The gym is also offering arm bands that they are selling for one of their members who is walking on Oct. 9, 10, and 11, to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Donations can be made, and all proceeds will go toward the member’s walk.

“Our goal is to keep our members on the treadmills 24 hours a day, to get the most donations, and we are selling the arm bands, too, in an attempt to help Lisa.”

Trader said they had heard from lots of people who didn’t necessarily want the commitment of a gym membership but wanted to be part of the October fundraising, so they are offering their special one-month membership for $30.

They will kick off the October fundraising on Monday, Oct. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. A representative from the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition will be on hand, and refreshments will be provided. The night is open to members and non-members alike.

World Gym is located in the Mid-Sussex Shopping Center in Millsboro (near Shoe Show/Roses) and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A special key card is given to members, so the gym is available at any time that is convenient to them. For more information, call (302) 933-0722 or visit www.worldgym.com.
