McCabe's Gourmet Market turns 25

Here in Sussex County, if you look in the right places, you can find breakfast hotspots and sandwich shops, but there has only been one McCabe’s Gourmet Market, whose longevity and popularity have made it a staple throughout the community. With springtime upon us, the South Bethany favorite, celebrating a quarter-century and counting, is opening its doors for the season, once again, serving up fresh brewed coffees and unrivaled, gourmet sandwiches.

The crew at McCabe’s has been working hard to provide the community with gourmet food and market items for 25 years.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing this for 25 years,” said Rebecca Mais, who owns and runs the shop along with her husband, Richard. “McCabe’s success has truly been amazing, and we have wonderful patrons and a great staff who have made it what it is today. We’ve got some customers who have been coming in since the day we opened.”

And it’s no wonder they’re still coming in. Freshly baked cinnamon rolls, muffins, scones and croissants compliment flavored lattes, cappuccinos and espressos, or your traditional, hot cup of joe in the morning. Homemade chili and creamy, chicken salad are some of the market’s most popular sellers, while dishes like McCabe’s Greek salad, topped with feta, calamata olives, red onions, cucumbers and tomatoes or a brie and fresh fruit tray, offer a healthy alternative at lunchtime.

When establishing McCabe’s, Richard and Rebecca Mais wanted not only to thrive as a locally owned shop, but integrate the business into the community. “We’ve followed a lot of families, and they’ve followed us,” said Rebecca Mais. “One of most important things to us is community involvement, and we’ve seen a lot of support. That’s something that will continue at McCabe’s.” Selbyville meat distributor, Roger Sexauer, has been a key supplier for McCabe’s, as well as Haddon House out of New Jersey, who supply the gourmet market’s shelf foods. “We’ve been working with the same partners for all these years,” said Mais. “Their products are amazing, and they really help us lead with quality. Without them, we couldn’t have made it as far as we have. They have been a big part of our success. When the sales people care about you and your business, it really makes life easier.” Keeping the same partners with the market for so long has helped McCabe’s return each year with the same, customary menu, but at the same time, they’re always looking to offer something new.

“We are trying to stay up with what’s hot,” noted Rebecca Mais. “We carry different grilling sauces and oriental marinades. Recently, sushi has become very popular, and we carry a variety of wasabi sauces and other things you’d want. We’re always looking for new trends with house wears and cool gadgets.”

The staff has also helped make McCabe’s what it is today, too. “We have some of the same people that we started working with,” said Rebecca Mais, “and our baker has been with us for 16 years. Our staff consists of mothers, kids, foreign students — a lot of friendly faces, and everyone brings a little something different to the job. When you enjoy everyone you work with, time really flies by. It seems like it hasn’t been that long since McCabe’s first opened.” Appealing location along Coastal Highway in South Bethany’s York Beach Mall has also helped attract a great number of customers.

McCabe’s opened this week, and will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., and 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays. The shop will be closed on Mondays.

“We have a lot of support from the other stores in the shopping center,” said Mais. “We’re just going to continue to make great sandwiches and salads. We’re a friendly place to come and get a smile and a pleasant person to wait on you.” Stop by McCabe’s Gourmet Market, located in the York Beach Mall in South Bethany.
