Since the age of 12, Janilyn Elias recalls the family trips to the Delaware beaches throughout the summertime, and working at the then-and-now, well-known establishments, like The Right Angle and Dirty Harry’s. This spring, she’s brought a little bit more to Fenwick Island, too, with Indulgence, the newest head-turning gift shop in the Village of Fenwick. Once inside, shoppers will notice an array of products for themselves and their four-legged friends. As Elias describes, Indulgence sports unique gifts for pets and their people.
“I really just wanted to bring a nice store to the area without all the beach items you see, everywhere,” she said. “I wanted to offer something that people are still looking for, but not something that you would necessarily get everywhere. People can come in from out of town, but there’s plenty of stuff that locals would enjoy, too.” From journals and keepsake books to soaps, candles and incense, Indulgence has everything you’re looking for to make your beach retreat feel more like a home, or to make your home just a little more cozy. And Fido will thank you for stopping in, as well, with fancy, lead-free, dishwasher-safe, glazed bowls, eco-friendly rugs and an assortment of toys and treats. Her cocker spaniel, Sox, happens to be a beach bum at heart, and greets customers walking in and passing by.
“I’ve noticed a lot of people walking their dogs around town, especially around the shops at the Village of Fenwick,” said Elias, “and I quickly learned that there wasn’t a store in the area like this. Hopefully, it encourages more people to bring their pets out and find something that you aren’t going to see all over the place. There are plenty of people out with their dogs in Bethany Beach, and I’d like to see more of that in Fenwick. I always loved to shop when I came to the beach. I like to offer the things that make people say, ‘Oh my gosh, where did you get that?’ I think that’s what a lot of people are looking for when they shop at the beaches, too.”
Prior to trying her hand at retail, Elias has worked in education for 15 years, and is currently acquiring her doctorate, while husband, Jeff, is getting his second Master’s degree. “We keep busy,” said Elias, “but this is like a dream come true. My parents have recently passed away, but and I always loved being here with them, and now I have something I can bring to the area. It’s exactly what I’ve always wanted.”
Indulgence has been accommodating customers since it opened at the start of April, and a quickly approaching summer season has Elias optimistic. “The shops here are great, and everyone I’ve talked to is happy to see a store like Indulgence here in the area,” she said. Among some of the shop’s most popular items are the scented hand soaps and Woozies, coozies for your wine glass. “I had no idea that soaps were so popular,” she admitted, “but I’ve already had to restock them three times. And the Woozies are a lot of fun. Personalized stationaries, done right there in the store, have also turned out to be a hot commodity at Indulgence, too.
Elias plans to welcome even more friends and community members next weekend with the grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration on May 7 at 4 p.m. Charlie’s Bayside will provide catering, while live entertainment, approved especially for the event, will be offering soothing tunes. Fenwick Wine Cellars will also be on hand with their products. “Most of the time,” said Elias, “you only have one ribbon-cutting, so you may as well make it a good one.”
The shop is now open seven days a week, located at 300 Coastal Highway, Store #4 in Fenwick Island. Call (302) 537-8591 or visit www.indulgencefi.com for more information.
