In early November, Mermaid Cove made a splash along the Route 54 corridor, at the location of the former Williamsville Deli. With a hearty selection of seafood items and comfort food, customers are making it a habit to swing on in for the restaurant’s new look and a meal or two.
“People stop in a lot for lunch,” said owner Tina Littleton. “It’s at a great location, and customers seem to enjoy it.”
As for the name?
“It was a nice concept for the decor,” she explained.
The proximity to the beach has made Mermaid Cove an easy choice. Their light-fare menu includes soups and salads, made right on the premises, while those with a larger appetite can choose from seafood favorites that include hand-breaded oysters, crabcakes and crab imperial, or home-style meals such as hot turkey or roast beef sandwiches and meat loaf. More than 10 lunch specials, priced at $9.99, are available each day.
By the summer season, Littleton is anticipating bringing in a wider dinner selection, to include prime rib, fried chicken and ribs. Since opening, Littleton – who has been in the seafood business along the Route 54 corridor for more than a decade – has made a strong attempt to work with locals.
“We offer fresh fish platters,” she said, “whether it’s salmon, tuna or rockfish. I work with local watermen, who operate within the seasons. It means a lot to work with the people in the area.”
Desserts, including pumpkin pie, jumbo cupcakes and Smith Island cakes – either whole or by the slice – are also a common selection from the menu.
“We offer WiFi here,” noted Littleton. “Customers can stop in for a coffee and a slice of cake while they sit at their laptops.”
Inside seating can accommodate 20, while outside seating will be available as warmer weather rolls in, too. For now, carry-out seems to be the most popular choice for the business. For those who can’t make it over to the Mermaid Cove but are close by, delivery is a possibility, too. Free delivery with a $15 order minimum can serve as a convenient alternative for the employees of businesses along Route 54.
The menu items aren’t the only thing that set Mermaid Cove apart. Customers can also pick up seafood tools, such as oyster and clam knives, lobster claw crackers and fish scalers. Regional seafood items, such as spices and dressings, are also carried at Mermaid Cove.
Mermaid Cove is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. every Monday through Thursday, and is open until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. They are closed each Sunday.
