A bolt of lightning struck the Frankford United Methodist Church steeple around 9 p.m. on Friday, June 18.
The steeple, which is approximately 70 feet high, sustained some damage in the form of a large crack, from which wood, shingles and nails blew into the road. There appeared to be no major damage to the bell tower or annex immediately below.
No one was reported injured, and the church appeared to be unoccupied at the time of the strike.
The Frankford and Roxana volunteer fire companies diverted traffic around the church on Main Street in Frankford. Roxana's ladder truck, Tower 90, allowed emergency responders to examine the damage.
Two tarps were attached to the steeple to prevent further damage to the church during Friday's strong storm, with it's heavy rain and lightning.
