On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Frankford Volunteer Fire Company will hold its Third Annual Bull and Oyster Roast. The event will raise money to help the fire department purchase a new truck.
“This is more or less to get us a new truck. That’s why we do it, to get money as a fundraiser,” explained Frankford Fire Company Capt. Curtis Stevens.
Stevens said their current truck is so old that it would be more cost-effective to purchase a new vehicle rather than repair and modify what they already have.
“We have a very old piece that is an open cab in the back,” he said. “We’d switch that piece out so that we can enclose the cabin for safety, and it looks better. It’s an older truck, so we need to get a new pump and things like that, as well. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a new truck than to get this one fixed over and over and over.”
The dinner will be held at the fire hall, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and will offer attendees raw and steamed oyster fritters and beef, as well as an assortment of sides, including potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans. There will also be soft drinks and beer available.
Stevens said that the company purchases everything out of pocket and hopes that they will be able to raise money to contribute to their truck fund.
“I hope we can raise as much money as we can,” he said. “The only hope I have is that we actually gain some money and not just break even. We need money. You know, everybody needs it. They’ve cut how much money we get every year, so we’ve got to everything we can to keep us up and running.”
Tickets may be purchased in advance for $25, or at the door for $30. Stevens said that, last year, more than 200 people attended the roast.
“We’ll have door prizes that will be raffled off,” Stevens said. “We have gift certificates for food, we have MMA tickets and we have a microwave, a basket of cheer, things like that.”
Stevens said the company of 50 firefighters and 20 auxiliary members hope the community will come out and support their company and their worthwhile cause, while also having a good time.
“We hope for a good turnout and that everyone has a good time while they’re here.”
