As the weather warms and a mild winter transitions into spring, more and more golfers will be hitting the links, and with the opening of Ruddo’s Golf in Fenwick Island, PGA professionals John Ruddo and Bret Marshall are looking forward to another busy and successful season.
“Our main focus was to bring a golf store to a central location for our customers,” said Marshall, who will oversee the Fenwick Island Ruddo’s Golf shop that has filled the former Atlantic Books location. After managing their Lewes store for seven years, Marshall is optimistic that the new Fenwick Island shop will be able to accommodate local, weekly golfers, as well as the seasonal visitors and weekend warriors.
“A lot of our customers between West Ocean City and Lewes didn’t want to drive all the way up or down, out of their way,” he said. “This location is a perfect fit, and we’re looking forward to the season.”
“Our biggest concern,” added John Ruddo, who has been running his West Ocean City shop on Route 611 since 1997, “was that our locations were 32 miles apart. We wanted something that would help take care of customers in between, like in Fenwick, Bethany Beach and Sea Colony, and give them a local store they could stop by whenever they wanted.”
From top-of-the-line clubs and accessories to men’s and women’s apparel and shoes, Ruddo’s Golf offers everything needed to prepare golfers for the course.
“In some golf stores,” said Ruddo, “you can find a lot of equipment, but just a little bit of apparel. In a lot of pro shops, you’ll find a lot of apparel, but no equipment and maybe a small selection of shoes. Customers can get all three here.”
As they get settled in Fenwick, Marshall expects more products to hit the shelves. Shoe brands including Nike, Adidas and Footjoy are popular picks among shoppers, while golf products are available from names including Cobra, Titleist, Callaway and Odyssey.
“Some of our most popular products are the Taylor Made clubs and golf balls,” Ruddo added. “Their new Rocketballz line is very popular, as well as their R11S drivers and the irons, too. We’ve also done really well with our Ping products. People really seem to like them.”
“Ever since the Rocketballz came out,” said Marshall, “and people are seeing their ads, a lot them are thinking about golf. As temperatures start warming up, more and more people have been stopping into our stores, too. Fenwick is a great town with a lot of foot-traffic, and lots of customers are coming by.”
With a convenient location near the intersection of Coastal Highway and Route 54, and a close proximity to a bevy of courses, such as Bayside, Cripple Creek, Bear Trap and Bethany Bay, Marshall and Ruddo have already been receiving positive feedback from the locals.
“It’s really awesome to have those products available for golfers in Fenwick Island [and surrounding areas],” said David Twining, an avid golfer and owner of Nantucket’s restaurant and the Lobster Shanty in Fenwick Island. “John was one of first pros to ever teach our son the game, and it’s great that they’re bringing this into town.” Bayside and Lighthouse Sound are among Twining’s favorite courses in the Delaware and Maryland shore regions.
“The winter months are typically slower for us,” acknowledged Ruddo, “like January and February. But it gives us time to prepare each year. The spring and fall are peak seasons, when things really start to pick up. Not too many people know we’re here yet, but we’re hoping that we can get the word out and start seeing a lot of customers stopping by.”
Ruddo’s Golf is now open at 101 Coastal Highway in Fenwick Island, just north of the intersection of Route 1 and Route 54, in the old Atlantic Books location. Stop in for more information or call them at (302) 581-0005.
