In May, the Fenwick Town Council unanimously approved “Fenwick Flicks,” partnering with the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce to offer a free monthly movie on the beach in the coastal town.
“We wanted to create an event in Fenwick Island, since they’re part of our service area and we don’t actually have an event in Fenwick right now,” said Carrie Subity, executive director of the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber, to the town council. “It would be family-friendly and drive folks to come play mini-golf, shop around in the town, gift shops, et cetera.”
The movies will be held on Tuesday nights on Bayard Street, due to the handicapped accessible Mobi Mats in place there. Subity said the Chamber would contract out the rental equipment to show the movie and the movies would be family-friendly, rated either G or PG.
Subity said the Chamber had already spoken to Fenwick business owners who offered their shops’ parking lots to accommodate visitors on movie nights, and she requested that the Town consider leniency when it comes to parking violations on those nights.
“The Chamber has been talking to businesses that will be closed during the movie. Some have already offered their parking lots,” she said.
The Chamber also hopes to print up movie tickets that advertise Fenwick businesses.
“The mission is a monthly family-friendly evening that encourages visitation to Fenwick to shop, eat and patronize our businesses. We were thinking of printed movie tickets, advertising local businesses offering discounts or specials that night. Again, it’s just another thing to get people to want to come down to Fenwick and patronize our businesses prior to the movie.”
Councilman Todd Smallwood said he was in favor of having movie nights and thought it would be beneficial to the Town to partner with the Chamber.
“I think it’s a great idea. I would like to try this… We haven’t done enough, as a town, to partner with the Chamber.”
The movie nights, which will start around dusk, have been scheduled for June 26, July 24 and Aug. 21, with the hopes of a fourth night in early September.
