Delaware State Police this week were investigating a crash involving a 7-year-old girl who was struck and run over while riding her bike near Frankford last weekend.
According to DSP, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 9, around 7:30 p.m., as Salma Cruz, 7, was riding her bike on Pine Cone Lane in the Pepper Ridge Mobile Home Park.
Police said Eduardo Canseco, 40, was driving a 2003 Honda motorcycle northbound on Pine Cone Lane in the mobile home park when the motorcycle struck the rear of the bicycle, which Cruz had been riding northbound, directly in front of Canseco.
According to police, Cruz was ejected from the bike, landing in the roadway, and she was then run over by the motorcycle. The DSP said Canseco initially stopped at the scene of the crash but then fled to a residence located on Lively Drive, where he was subsequently apprehended by responding troopers.
They said that Cruz was removed from the scene by emergency medical service personnel and flown to the A.I. DuPont Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and later released.
DSP said Canseco was not injured. He was cited by troopers with one count each of driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular assault 2nd degree, failure to report a crash and failure to render aid at a crash involving injury. He was arraigned at JP Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution for lack of $1,700 secured bail.
