Coastal farmers’ markets appear all set to grow in 2012

Summer has officially arrived, and with that area’s coastal farmers’ markets are starting up. The Fenwick Island Farmer’s Market will start Monday, June 25, at 8 a.m. The mid-week market at the Marketplace at Sea Colony will open Wednesday, June 27, at 8 a.m. And the market in downtown Bethany Beach will start Sunday, July 1, at 8 a.m.

Carrie Bennett of Bennett Orchards heads up the market at the Marketplace at Sea Colony, and she said they are very excited as they head into their second year at that location.

“We have two new vendors this year,” she said. “We are going into it with a lot of enthusiasm.”

She said the mid-week market did very well last year, and they hope to do so again. In addition to having a prime location across from Sea Colony and surrounded by shops in the Marketplace, Bennett said the spot is visually appealing for Route 1 passersby, as well.

“We are grateful to the property owners, Saul Centers Inc., and to the Sea Colony board of directors. It really fits in well with their ‘healthy-living lifestyle’ and is quite complementary to that.”

Ellen Magee of Magee Farms heads up the Fenwick Island Farmers’ Market and said they have a few new vendors this year, as well. Fenwick Island’s market is held two days a week, each Monday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon at the PNC Bank lot at Coastal Highway and East Essex Street.

“It’s gotten bigger and bigger each year,” said Magee, adding that she is looking forward to the market’s fourth year.

In addition, downtown Bethany Beach has its markets on Sundays, starting July 1 and running through Sept. 2.

Many local growers participate in more than one, if not all, of the coastal markets. They include Bennett Orchards, Hudson’s Produce, Good Earth Market and Organic Farm, and Magee Farms, among others.
