New Fenwick Island home for C&E Furniture caters to coastal area

C&E Furniture has dedicated more than 30 years to serving the coastal area with custom designs, one-of-a-kind decor and a wide variety of furniture styles and motifs, and with a new location in Fenwick Island, owner Katie Winnington is helping to keep the tradition in the family.

C&E Furniture's new location in Fenwick Island, along Coastal Highway, features a wide array of beds, dressers, bureaus, couches and home decor.

Originally situated along Route 113 in Selbyville, the warehouse and 12-showroom store was a bit out of the way for customers around the beach area. Now, with a spot right in the Ocean Bay Plaza along Coastal Highway, Winnington, who bought the business from her mother, Nancy, this past winter, expects to reach a wider range of clientele.

“We have all types of styles of furniture,” she said, “and we really cater to the coastal area. It’s definitely nice to be closer to the beaches, and we are holding true to what we’ve always done in Selbyville.”

The inventory is similar, with a wide range of beds, rugs, sofas and love seats, dining sets, armoires, desks, gifts and decor accessories. Although the new spot is a reduction in floor space, Winnington noted that it allows C&E to really provide clients with the services they really want to offer.

“The smaller location is better suited for what we provide,” she said. “We do a lot of custom design work, and we still have a lot on-hand. If someone walks in and doesn’t see what they’re looking for, it doesn’t mean we can’t do it.”

The smaller showroom, she added, also helps keep the selection fresh and new.

“The space is really nice,” she noted. “We are able to change up what’s on the floor a bit more and have a bigger turnaround.”

Many customers who have stopped in over the years were discouraged and sad to see the Selbyville location close their doors last fall, Winnington noted, and there has been a sigh of relief from those same patrons who have stopped by the new spot in Fenwick Island.

“People were upset when we were closing in Selbyville,” she said, “and they thought we were gone for good. Now, they are stopping in all the time. It’s good to see them again.”

The C&E name has been around since the 1960s, when it opened as a television and radio repair store, but furniture was never too far behind. Katie Winnington’s grandparents, Donald and Jean Selway, took over the Selbyville location, prompting their daughter, Nancy, Katie’s mother, to join the business by the 1980s.

Now that the shop is in its third generation for the family, the former owners couldn’t be more proud.

“I’m happy to see [Katie] taking it over,” Nancy said of her daughter. “And my father is thrilled, too.”
