Lady Indians shut down by Seaford

The Indian River girls’ tennis team dropped to 0-2 this season after a 0-5 shutout by the Seaford Blue Jays on March 24.

First-ranked singles player senior Jessica Powers lost to Seaford’s Laura Riddle, 6-0, 6-0, in consecutive sets, bringing her record to 1-1 for the season.

Second singles player Jessica Hazzard evened the match at one set apiece going into the third set, but couldn’t hold onto the momentum. Hazzard lost her match 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, and evened her season record at 1-1. Junior Laura Walter lost her second match of the season by falling 6-4, 6-1, to Seaford’s J.J. Morgan.

Indian River’s doubles teams didn’t fare much better in the match, losing both to round out the day without a victory. The Indians first doubles team of Alison and Erica Evans (senior and sophomore respectively) were trumped 6-0 in both sets by Seaford’s Beth Pepper and Darianne Libby.

The Indians’ second doubles team of Jessica Garcia and Kara Roach (senior and sophomore respectively) also lost their match in consecutive sets but were able to pry a single game away from Seaford. Garcia and Roach lost 6-1, 6-0.

The Indians will look to rebound as they prepare to host St. Thomas More in that team’s inaugural game of the season, set for April 5.
