Whether they’ve realized it or not, many local residents and visitors have already seen the Barefoot Gardeners’ work: in the median in Fenwick Island, at Justin’s Beach House in Bethany Beach or at town hall in Fenwick Island. Now, people can enjoy their first flower show, Gifts by the Sea, at St. Matthew’s by-the-Sea Church on Friday, Aug. 17, from noon to 3 p.m.
Karen Dudley, president of the Barefoot Gardeners, said the group has been around since 2004, and the members all like to learn about flowers and help the community out with beautification projects and scholarships.
“We like to educate members of the community about gardening — it’s a great learning process,” she said.
The flower show will feature horticulture specimens grown by club members. There will be 16 unique designs that will focus on coastal living and community educational exhibits. All flower enthusiasts are being invited to attend the free event.
“I am very excited for the Barefoot Gardener’s first flower show,” said Dudley. “I had no idea how much we would all learn from putting together this show, and I really hope that people who come and see it will learn something new, too.”
She said the show will be judged, and it will be in a Small Standard Flower Show format. The Barefoot Gardeners Club is a member of the Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs and National Garden Clubs (NGC Inc.). Awards will be given under the NGC Standard System of Awards.
St. Matthew’s by-the-Sea is located at the corner of Coastal Highway and Dagsboro Street in Fenwick Island. For more information on the show, or the Barefoot Gardeners, call Dudley at (302) 436-2223.
