Looking for an excuse to play golf during the week? Well, the Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce has the perfect excuse to head to the greens!
The Chamber will be hosting its 14th Annual Golf Classic on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Baywood Greens. The golf tournament is designed to help the Chamber raise money for its annual scholarship given to high-school seniors.
“We usually give out one $1,000 scholarship per year to a student in our area,” said Amy Simmons, Chamber coordinator, noting that Delmarva Christian High School senior Sarah Bryan received last year’s scholarship.
“Last year we had the largest number ever, I think. We had 13 kids apply for that. I was really impressed that we had that many.”
Those who are interested in playing in the tournament may register prior to the event or on the day of the event at 8 a.m. Participation for teams of four costs $500, and individuals pay $125 to participate. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
“We can have as many players as we want. They would like us to have 100 golfers for the tournament,” said Simmons, adding that, last year, approximately 85 people participated in the tournament.
Simmons added that those who are interested in participating do not have to worry about not having a foursome.
“Sometimes, there might be a group of three. If there’s an individual person that wants to play, we fill them in somewhere, so no one is alone.”
During the event, mulligans will be sold, as well as the chance to move closer to the pin for $20. Prizes will be awarded for the tournament, including rounds of golf at area courses.
“In the morning, participants will receive a breakfast sandwich and beverage, and their registration fee includes a cart, free water on the course and a very nice catered lunch by Baywood,” she added.
Simmons said that she hopes golfers in the community will participate in the event, to show support for such a worthy cause.
