Melissa King, a 2012 Indian River High School graduate who lives in the Bethany Beach area, was recently crowned Miss Delaware Teen USA 2013. King will represent Delaware in the Miss Teen USA contest in July, with her platform of “Finding the Balance.”
“It was awesome,” said King, of being crowned the winner. “I cried. It was really cool to be able to go all the way and win.”
King explained that her “Finding the Balance” platform is about maintaining overall health and wellbeing, including mental, emotional and physical health, while also focusing on healthful eating and exercise and fitness. She also plans to sponsor a competitive athletics grant for under-privileged and foster youth.
“I’ve been in gymnastics since I was 10, and a lot of people cannot afford to do so because of the cost,” said King, explaining why she plans to help offer such a grant.
She also was a cheerleader all through high school and has coached gymnastics, as well, which, in part, led to her interest in physical fitness and overall health for her platform.
Since being crowned, King has made appearances and watched Miss USA 2012 Olivia Culpo win the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas, Nev.
“We were lucky enough to have it in the United States, and I got to watch Miss USA win!” explained King.
She will also take part in Fashion Week in Philadelphia, as well as other appearances coming up this spring.
This year was King’s second time at the pageant. Her first trip was last year, and she said it was “really cool” to come back and win it a year later. Last year, she was crowned Miss Teen Delaware International 2012, and she said she is excited to be representing Delaware this year as Miss Teen Delaware USA 2013.
King has plans to attend the University of Arkansas in the fall and will be majoring in communications. She said she has an interest in fashion, as well as journalism and broadcasting. According to her Web site, she hopes to use those interests to work for a fashion magazine in New York City or maybe on the sidelines of an NFL game, as a sports journalist. She said she “likes the sound of both.”
