Sussex Academy of the Arts and Sciences (SAAS) is inviting eighth-grade students, their parents and guardians to an open house for next year’s potential ninth-graders.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, visitors can preview history in the making from 9 to 11 a.m. as the SAAS charter school prepares to open Sussex Preparatory Academy, a charter high school. The SAAS middle school was built in 1999 as a free alternative to traditional public schools. Fundraising began in 2012 to expand and open Sussex Prep.
Prospective students can tour the school, learn about the curriculum, sports, extracurricular activities and the parent-teacher organization. Current teachers, students and parents will be on-hand to discuss the school firsthand.
“As a middle school, we have a reputation for exceptional academic performance, and we plan to continue that exemplary learning program in the ninth and tenth grade,” said Patricia Oliphant, SAAS director. “We are pursuing candidacy for the IB [International Baccalaureate] program.”
This fall, these schools will open together in a new building. In June, the ever-growing SAAS student population will swap buildings with the more intimate numbers of Delmarva Christian High School, also located in Georgetown.
Sussex Prep will only open to ninth grade at first, then expand to upper grades in the future. Only Delaware students are eligible to attend the charter school.
The SAAS open house will take place at the current Delmarva Christian High School, located at 21150 Airport Road in Georgetown.
Refreshments will be served, and guests will be eligible for a prize drawing. People may use the school’s left entrance.
Applications will be available online at www.sussexacademy.org. For more information, contact Sussex Academy at (302) 856-3636.
