Bethany Dental welcomes new associate

Last summer, Bethany Dental Associates welcomed dentist Matt Baran into their practice as their newest general dentist. Baran completed his undergraduate degree at Bucknell University and graduated from Temple University, where he did his dental training, and completed his residency at York Hospital in June of last year.

“I was always interested in working with my hands, and I knew I wanted to work in healthcare and use my hands at the same time. Dentistry seemed like the perfect fit,” said Baran.

“I guess it started back when I was in high school and I saw my brother Chris, who actually works for a practice in Wilmington, in dental school. When my brother went through it, I kind of shadowed him a little bit while he was going through school and his early years being a dentist. When I was finishing up college, I decided to take the boards to get into dental school, and that’s kind of how it all got started.”

Baran said that he enjoys practicing general dentistry, rather than being a specialist, because he’s able to work in all aspects of dentistry.

“I’m pretty well-versed in all facets of dentistry. I did a residency program at the York Hospital. I’ve been very well trained. I’ve done all kinds of root canals, crown and bridge work, dentures, implants. I pretty much practice in every area,” he explained. “It’s like a jack-of-all-trades,” he said. “There are specialists in every field of dentistry, but that’s why I like to be a general dentist — because you get a taste of everything, and that’s the part I really do enjoy.”

Baran commutes to the Bethany Beach office every Tuesday and also works at Brown Family Dentistry in Wilmington. He noted that he doesn’t mind the drive and is happy he gets to visit the beach once a week.

“I love it. It gives me a chance to see the beach at least once a week. It was really nice in the summertime, coming down and going over the bridge. I grew up coming to the beach in Delaware because I was born and raised in Delaware,” he said. “Every now and then, on my way home, I’ll go and sit by the beach for a couple of minutes and soak it in while I’m down here.”

When he’s not helping people have a more beautiful and healthy smile, Baran is out golfing, snowboarding or playing lacrosse.

“Lacrosse is one of my biggest hobbies,” he noted. “I played in high school. I played collegiately at Bucknell. I played professionally at New Jersey Pride. In the spring, I’ll be playing with the Starboard Lacrosse Club. So now I’ll be at the beach more often, playing every Sunday in Dewey.”

Baran said he doesn’t know what the future holds for his career in dentistry, but for now he’s enjoying the work and the beach.

“I’m really just enjoying being an associate of the practices that I work at. I really enjoy working with multiple different staffs, different assistants, with different docs. Right now I’m just enjoying it, and what the future holds — that’s to be determined,” he said. “I’m excited to be back in private practice. I’m very dedicated to working hard to further my dental career.”
