Salons celebrating Earth Month by trading services for help

In an effort to support and promote clean water locally and globally, local salons All About U! and Salon on Central will be offering their beauty services on April 22 in exchange for a small donation to Earth Month.

“I got involved with Aveda a long time ago because of how they give back to the environment,” said Cathy Lynch, owner of Aveda concept salon All About U!. “That’s one of the things they are involved in every year with Earth Month.”

This year, for Earth Month, Aveda salons are supporting bringing clean water to Madagascar, along with supporting American Rivers, an organization working to protect and restore the nation’s rivers and streams.

“I think this is kind of close to home. Their main goal is to clean up the Potomac River. The Potomac River supplies 5 million people with clean drinking water. It’s really dirty, and they’re trying to get it cleaned up,” said Lynch.

“If you donate $12, we give you a candle,” she noted. “Those 12 dollars give clean water to a family for a year in Madagascar. That’s a dollar a month. In Madagascar, they’ve been known to walk 6 miles one way to get clean water.”

All About U! is hoping to raise $1,400 on April 22 from noon to 6 p.m., offering various services, including $30 dry cuts.

“Any service that we do that day is going to be donated. It’s not just haircuts, anything that we do,” said Lynch.

“We’ll have polish changes going on, hand scrubs, $1 minute mini-massages, makeup applications,” added Shona Hancock, noting that if a salon visitor enjoys three services or more, they will receive 10 percent off of an Aveda product. “There’s quite a bit of stuff going on.”

For a $10 donation, people may attend a lifestyle workshop at t 11 a.m.

“The workshop will teach people about small de-stress things to do at home. They can takes these things home with them, practice them and de-stress their lives. They don’t have to keep coming back to the salon,” explained Hancock.

During the day, All About U! will also be participating in a global 24-hour cut-a-thon, along with other Aveda stylists in salons worldwide — from Tokyo to Sydney, Moscow to London, New York to Minneapolis. Aveda salons will jointly attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most money raised for a charity in a 24-hour period through haircuts.

“Everybody that’s participating in that, we’re one of the participants, so our name will be in the Guinness World Records if we make our goal,” said Lynch. “Aveda’s goal is to raise $5 million in 24 hours. I think that’s kind of cool.”

Salon on Central will also be participating in Aveda’s Earth Month-Earth Day fundraising efforts.

“They encourage everybody to participate in Earth Day. It’s a great cause, so we’re doing what we can,” said Barbara Svenson, one of the owners of the salon.

Svenson said the salon will be offering shampoos and blow dries for $20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The salon has also been selling $5 raffle tickets for a rainbow trout artwork painted by Svenson.

“We have a large painting in our front window that we’ll be raffling off on Earth Day. It’s of a rainbow trout. The relevance of that is, the proceeds of that will all go to American Rivers, and rainbow trout are a freshwater fish.”

Svenson said she hadn’t intended to raffle off the painting but, after customers suggested it, she thought it would be a great addition to the day’s fundraising efforts.

“It seemed like another opportunity to raise funds for American Rivers, and that was fine with me.”

Svenson said that she hopes the salon is able to raise funds for Earth Month and hopes the local community will come out to support Aveda’s mission for clean water.

“We’re just happy to be able to do this, and we hope to see a lot of people come out to support this cause.”
