Coastal Point cleans house at MDDC awards

The Coastal Point cleaned up this past week at the annual awards conference of the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association Inc. (MDDC) which recognizes outstanding work in all aspects of news publication in the region. The independent weekly newspaper brought home a total of 41 awards including five Best in Show awards and sweeping six categories completely.

Coastal Point’s Maria Counts and Laura Walter were on hand at the annual MDDC Editorial Contest Awards ceremony to pick up the Point’s awards.

The MDDC is a 100-year-old association comprising 164 newspapers in the Maryland, Delaware and D.C. areas, including all of the region’s daily newspapers and many of the non-dailies in the area.

For the 2012 year, the Coastal Point won 38 awards for advertising in their division of non-dailies with a circulation of 15,000 to 35,000, including five Best of Category awards for Best Restaurant/Entertainment Ad (Tom Maglio), Best Home Furnishing and Appliance Ad (Bob Bertram), Best Food Ad (Bob Bertram), Best Real Estate Ad (Bob Bertram) and Best Innovative Concept/Wild Card (Coastal Point staff).

The Coastal Point advertising department was also a 2013 Advertising Contest Sweepstakes Winners in their division, taking first, second, and third place in six categories: Best Restaurant/Entertainment Ad, Best Apparel/Jewelry and Accessories Ad, Best Use of Humor, Best Print Small Ad, Best Print Community Service, Best Print House Promotion Ads.

Not one to toot his own horn, Bertram simply praised co-worker Maglio for a job well done.

"Tom Maglio has only been with us for a year, yet he rocked the MDDC." he said.

Maglio passed the praise back to his fellow cohorts.

“It's just really validating to be able to look back at my first year at the Coastal Point, and know I measure up to my excellent coworkers!” he said.

Point reporter Maria Counts was quick to give Bertram the praise he was too modest to give himself.

"The beauty of working at a small community paper is you get to be a part of every process that goes into creating it. Being able to see Bob Bertram work, and to be able to work with him on designing ads is such a pleasure. His gift and love for design is undeniable—just look at the sheer number of awards he receives year after year after year. "

The Coastal Point's editorial department took home three awards including two 1st place awards for point editor Darin McCann for Local Column: Feature or Humor, So, Riddle Me This - Why is My Head so Big? And Local Column: Critical Thinking, Put Everything Else Aside for this Special Holiday. Editorial staff R. Chris Clark, Maria Counts and Laura Walter also placed 2nd for Best use of Interactive Media for social media use during Hurricane Sandy, an incident that propelled the number of Coastal Point "friends" into the thousands overnight.

Walter called the award a team effort by the entire staff.

"I'm so proud of the storm coverage we provided as a newspaper. Half the staff was dodging the elements to get pictures and news, while the other half were writing updates, literally nonstop, 24 hours a day," Walter said. "We did it for the community, and more than 2,000 people began following the page during those three days."

McCann added that he only wished news editor M. Patricia Titus was recognized for her part in orchestrating the staff's use of social media during the storm.

"My only regret there is that our news editor, M. Patricia Titus, was not included in this. Tricia really steers the ship on our online news efforts, and puts in a lot of effort informing our readers when storms happens" said McCann. "That being said, Chris, Laura and Maria really did exemplary work covering the storm, and I think our readers online really appreciated what they did."

As for Counts he added "she works so hard, and takes so much pride in her craft, that it's incredibly satisfying to see her get rewarded for her efforts. Maria really cares about the stories she writes, and the people behind those stories, that it's hard to not appreciate her work."

And not one to miss a chance to poke fun at himself, McCann said of his two 1st place awards,"I'm just glad one of my relatives obviously judged those categories. The column is the most fun thing I do at work every week, and it's cool to know somebody out there appreciated them."

Walter and Counts attended the editorial awards last week with publisher Susan Lyons.

"It was such a pleasure to be able to attend the event, not only with our Publisher Susan Lyons, but also with fellow reporter Laura Walter. It was a proud moment for us, I think, to be able to represent our paper and our community" said Counts.

"Listening to the keynote speaker, we could check off what we as a paper are doing to try to better inform our readership. We have the printed paper, but we're also building our online presence through Facebook, Twitter, and the Coastal Point Minute. It was nice to hear that we are growing with the industry to disseminate news through various outlets."

In addition to the editorial awards, the Coastal Point took home 38 adverting awards including five that were Best in Show.
