Residents and visitors still have time to sign up to show off their talents at this year’s Bethany Beach Talent Show. The show has been dazzling Bethany crowds for more than 13 years and is regarded as a guaranteed fun time for all.
“It is definitely a very popular event that I’ve wanted to continue this year,” said Laren Hughes, the Town’s entertainment director, who took over that position earlier this year. “I’ve been getting a lot of calls about it.”
The talent show is limited to 25 acts total; however, numerous people may participate in a single act.
The only reason we do that is because it’s time-consuming,” explained Hughes of the limit. “So far, we’ve had a lot of singers register, but there may be some dancers and some other talents, as well.”
Those who wish to participate must register online on the town’s Web site by noon on Aug. 11.
“The talent show appeals to people of all ages. It has been going on for many years now. What better way for families to get together and enjoy a night, whether they live here or are on vacation? It’s just a great family event.”
Gloria Farrar, the former entertainment director for the Town, said the talent show was a popular event when she first started working for the Town more than a decade ago.
“It has always been very popular,” she said. “It goes from little kids, as young as 3, to people over 73.”
Farrar added that even outside of town she has been approached about the event.
“This past February, I was up in Reisterstown (Md.), and these two little girls came up to me and said, ‘Remember us? We were in the talent show. We were the Zebraettes!’ They did a cartwheel for me. It was so sweet.”
Hughes said that the talent show always draws a great crowd, just like all of the other Town-sponsored events.
“It’s just like any other event we have at the bandstand — thousands of people. The bandstand has just been packed. This summer, we’ve had a lot of really great acts, and this is just another popular activity.”
The annual talent show will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Bethany Beach Bandstand, and is free and open to the public.
“I hope it will be just as popular as it has been… I don’t think the talent show will be going away. It’s a crowd favorite!” said Hughes.
