Central Avenue intersection to close Monday for Route 26 project

Let the detours begin. A month of Central Avenue road closures begins in Ocean View on Monday, March 31, related to the State Route 26 construction project.

Due to relocation of the sewer force main, Central Avenue will be closed at the Route 26 intersection full-time until May 9. Construction continues 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, pending weather.

Route 26 and Central Avenue will remain open, but people cannot turn from one road to the other. Central Avenue will have full access all the way to Fulton Bank and the Verizon building, but basically have two dead-ends at the Route 26 intersection.

The Central Avenue pipes will be replaced and moved out of the storm drainage system’s way, said Ken Cimino, AECOM’s on-site public outreach coordinator.

Motorists should follow the posted detour when trying to access Central Avenue from Route 26 (Atlantic Avenue). Portable message signs will also help guide motorists through and around the work zone.

Planned detours will direct vehicles around Cedar Drive, Route 26, Route 1 and Fred Hudson Road.

Motorists can adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT’s smartphone application, available at Apple and Google Play stores. Or visit www.DelDOT.gov and click on the link to stores.

“There aren’t any planned” closures besides this and the Route 26 bridges near Lord Baltimore Elementary and Millville Town Hall in early 2015. “That doesn’t mean won’t be any in the future.”

DelDOT announces Route 26 lane closures for March 31 to April 4

Look for flaggers on Route 26. Motorists should continue to expect lane closures from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in several areas:

• Between Woodland Avenue and Tyler Drive for saw cutting of the roadway and relocation of sewer force mains;

• between Town Center Drive and Grants Avenue Route 17 saw cutting of the roadway;

• between West Avenue and Tyler Driver for sewer force main relocation.

Detours are not required for this. Traffic will alternate, as directed by flaggers. Motorists should drive with caution, slow down in work zones, and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.

Meanwhile, there will be no lane closures for the following: utility relocation and silt fence installation from Clarksville to Ocean View; installation of a new pump station west of Irons Lane; removal of items in the right-of-way from Route 17 to Grants Avenue.

Clarification: This story was updated to clarify that the intersection area of Central Avenue is closed, not the entire section of Central Avenue in the construction zone.
