Some of the top skim talent from not only around the area — but from around the world — will be on display this weekend, when the South Side Shoot Out gets under way on Saturday, June 4, at the Indian River Inlet.
Internationally-ranked professional and amateur riders from Delaware, California and as far as Brazil will again compete in the 11th annual Alley-Oop-sponsored event, as part of the United Skim Tour and Skim USA Tour.
“This is an opportunity for some of the local riders to get some points on their home turf,” said Alley-Oop’s Jason Wilson, the event organizer. “It’s a good kickoff to the summer skim scene here in Southern Delaware.”
Pros including Zap’s Sam McCoy and Exile’s Max Wheeler, as well as young gun Carter Hill, will be just some of the local names in the water, with preliminary heats running all day on Saturday, June, 4, and the semi-final and final rounds set for Sunday, June 5.
But you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy the festivities.
The event is free and open to the public, who’s encouraged to come see the show and enjoy live music from D.J. Woody B, local art on display, gear giveaways and raffles from sponsors, as well as a board painting station.
“You can come up and bring your board and get it painted for free,” Wilson explained. “It’s a little bit of a beach-fair environment.”
All funds raised from the event go toward a good cause, being donated to the Skim USA Scholarship fund, which awards money for two deserving students each year to help pay for their higher education.
Before the contest gets under way, skim fans are also being invited to check out the Sea Legs Creation Station Art Show at the Shorebreak Lodge in Rehoboth Beach on Thursday, June 2, starting at 5 p.m.
Then, on Friday June, Que Pasa in Dewey Beach will host a Skim USA Happy Hour from 5 to 7 p.m., with proceeds from discounted food and drinks going to support the Skim USA scholarship fund.
The details on Sunday’s after-party had yet to be announced mid-week.
