While they had previously tallied back-to-back wins and sent four players to the South Atlantic League All-Star game on Tuesday, June 21, the Delmarva Shorebirds struggled after the mid-season break, dropping four games in a row to Kannapolis on the road. However on Sunday, June 26, in the series’ final game, the ’Birds got back on track with a 5-3 win against the Intimidators to avoid the sweep.
After falling behind in the bottom of the fourth, Delmarva got some help from an error in the outfield, when a misplay turned a Cedric Mullins would-be single into an inside-the-park homer with two runners on, giving the ’Birds a 3-1 lead.
Kannapolis would answer, tying it back up by way of a two-run shot from Bradley Strong in the bottom of the seventh. But Delmarva RF Ademar Rifaela and 3B Austin Anderson would break the stalemate in the next inning, each tacking on RBI-singles to make it a 5-3 — a lead Delmarva would not relinquish.
RHP Mike Costello took the hill for most of the day, pitching six innings and allowing only one earned run on five hits, while tallying four strikeouts.
The 6-foot, 5-inch, 215-pound 23-year-old was signed by the Orioles in 2015 and joined the Shorebirds on June 8. In three appearances so far this season, he’s maintained a 1.88 ERA.
After a 6-3 loss to Greensboro on Monday, June 27, and seeing their Tuesday, June 28, matchup rescheduled to the following night due to rain, Delmarva was sitting at the bottom of South Atlantic League Northern (1-4) for the second half of the season.
They had finished the first half of the season just one game shy from the top, with a 42-27 record before the All-Star break.
Up next, the ’Birds will cap their series against Greensboro and then hit the road for a three-game series against Washington Nationals affiliate Hagerstown, spanning from Friday, July 1, to Sunday, July 3, before returning home for a seven-game stretch against Lakewood and Hagerstown on Tuesday, July 4.
The team will be wearing special patriotic jerseys to benefit the VFW for the Fourth of July game against Lakewood, with a fireworks show after the game. For ticket information, visit www.theshorebirds.com.
