The fireworks began long before the scheduled show time on Tuesday, July 5, with the Delmarva Shorebirds racking up a season-high 14 runs on 18 hits, to roll the Lakewood BlueClaws 14-2.
Trailing 1-0 headed into the bottom of the second inning, the ’Birds bats exploded, scoring nine runs on eight hits — capped by a three-run shot by Natanael Delgado over center that made it 9-1 before the inning’s third out.
Seven different players tallied multiple hits for Delmarva on the night, with Delgado and catcher Yermin Mercedes leading the offensive charge and going 3-4 from the plate. Delgado’s homer was his fifth on the season, and Mercedes brought his average up to .361 with the performance.
Austin Anderson went 3-3, his first three-hit game this season.
On the hill, recent South Atlantic League Player of the Week Cristian Alvarado earned his seventh win of the season, notching six strikeouts in the process, and now leads the SAL with 101 total.
The win evened the series against the BlueClaws to 1-1, and advanced the Shorebirds to 6-7 on the second half of the season, separating from Hickory (5-8) and Lakewood (5-8), while closing the gap on West Virginia (7-6) and Hagerstown (7-6).
After their final game of the series against Lakewood on Wednesday, July 6, (after Coastal Point press time), the ’Birds were gearing up for a homestand against Washington Nationals affiliate Hagerstown.
That series was set to get under way on Thursday, July 7, and span through Sunday, July 10. All of those matchups are scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with the exception of Sunday’s game, which will start at 5:05 p.m.
The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Friday will receive a free bobblehead of Manny Machado — former Shorebird and current Baltimore Orioles’ All-Star selection.
