The news just keeps getting better for Delmarva Shorebirds’ RHP Cristian Alvarado.
Just days after being named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week, the Venezuela native was named the Baltimore Orioles’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month for the month of June.
Since signing with the O’s in August 2011 at only 17, the now-21-year-old has yet to crack the organization’s Top 30 Prospect List.
However, the young gunslinger appears to be well on his way, after becoming the second-Shorebird pitcher to earn MLPM honors this season, behind LHP Garrett Cleavinger, who currently ranks as the O’s No. 22 pro prospect.
In six starts this June, Alvarado went a perfect 4-0 from the hill, holding down a 1.29 ERA and tallying 39 strikeouts in 35 innings, while holding opposing batters to a .205 average. During the stretch, he also allowed only 26 hits and walked four batters, with a 0.85 WHIP.
He capped the month with one of his top performances to date — a seven-inning, one-hit outing against the Greensboro Grasshoppers in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 29.
Currently, Alvarado leads the team in wins (seven) and strikeouts (104), and is second in WHIP (1.21). Collectively, the Shorebirds lead the South Atlantic League with a collective ERA of 2.92.
Alvarado is scheduled to make his next start on Saturday, July 16, against the Augusta GreenJackets, on the road.
