IR soccer boosters calling all alumni for ‘The Mixer’

There’s no question that both the boys’ and girls’ soccer programs at Indian River High School have had a lot to celebrate over the years. Over the course of the past five years alone, the boys’ team has made it four state title games and won it all twice, with the girls making school history with back-to-back title appearances in 2015 and 2016 themselves.

That’s in addition to all the Henlopen Southern Division titles, Henlopen Conference titles, All-Conference selections, All-State selections, Blue-Gold All-Star selections, Gatorade Players of the Year awards, Coach of the Year awards, NCAA scholarship offers… The list goes on.

On Friday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 10 p.m., however, program alumni far and wide will have a chance to honor it all while paving the way for the future teams to come, when the IR soccer boosters host “The Mixer” at the Frankford fire hall.

“We wanted to establish an annual fundraiser that would support both the boys’ side and the girls’ side of our soccer program,” said IR boys’ and girls’ soccer coach Steve Kilby of the inaugural event. “It’s just an opportunity to get together, catch up, celebrate past successes of our program and help continue that trend by raising some money for the future.”

The 21-and-older event will be catered by Hocker’s, with a cash bar provided by Mio Fratello’s, as well as the musical stylings of D.J. Wax.

That’s in addition to fundraising activities including both “Chinese” and silent auctions, in which local restaurants and businesses have donated gift cards and merchandise to the cause, as well as a 50/50 raffle.

The main attraction, according to those involved, will be the chance for IR and River soccer alumni from over the years to catch up with each other.

“It’s going to be a great time,” said Kilby. “I think of all the personalities that are in the area, alumni and the parents — I think everyone coming together, it’s going to be a lot of fun to relive their days playing and talk about all the things that we did. It’ll definitely be fun.”

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said former All-State selection and current Millsboro Middle School teacher and IR field hockey assistant coach Molly Chamberlin. “We had a lot of fun out there on the field. It’ll be awesome to get everybody together again.”

Tickets to the event cost $25, with all proceeds going to the IRHS Soccer Boosters to help benefit the program. To purchase a ticket, or to donate items for auction, call Tammy Stong at (302) 236-1970, Mary Ellen Whelen at (302) 539-1049 or Marsha White at (302) 245-7418.
