While online registration for the 2017 Lower Sussex Little League season is already open, the league will begin walk-up registration at the ballpark starting on Wednesday, Feb. 9, spanning through Saturday, Feb. 18.
Participants will have four chances to sign up in person, with additional sessions held on Saturday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the Pyle Center in Roxana.
Back this year for its third season is the District 3 “Challenger Division” for players with special needs.
Since getting its start in 2015, the division has been able to include players will all ranges of special needs, and has even made two appearances at the Little League World Series.
Contrary to some misconceptions, LSLL President T.J. Bunting explained, the Challenger Division is open to all players in the district, ranging from Seaford and Laurel all the way to Lewes.
As the HR manager for United Needs & Abilities and new LSLL president this year, Bunting is aiming to take the division to the next level, starting with a game featured on opening night.
“We’re trying to highlight that this year,” he said. “We really want it visible for everybody this year, and what better time than after the opening ceremony right there on Layton Field.”
“Challenger is very near and dear to my heart. We’re going to make it accessible to everybody who wants to play, no matter what.”
Registration cost for the Challenger Division is $25 for the season, with sign-up sessions being held on the same days, at the Pyle Center concession stand, and also online at www.lowersussexlittleleague.com.
Also returning this year will be opening-day festivities, including the homerun derby, base-running competition, bounce houses, a D.J. and more.
“It’s gonna be a great positive experience this year, I can tell you that right now,” said Bunting. “We’re are putting safety first and taking time to go over our safety plan to make sure it matches with Little League International. We’re going to have fair prices and great products at the concession stand. We’re going to have a great year all around.”
Opening Day this season is scheduled for Friday, April 7, and as always, the league is looking for umpires, concession stand volunteers and sponsors.
To inquire about sponsoring a field or team, or to volunteer, call T.J. Bunting at (302) 228-5583. Also, be on the lookout for ticket sales for a league fundraiser to be held at Jolly Roger Amusement Park in Ocean City, Md., this June.
