After raising upwards of $10,000 for research and local families battling childhood cancer in its first two years, the Get Well Gabby Skim A Thon will be back for year No. 3 this Saturday, June 17, ready to do it again.
The event, being held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the beach in front of Tower Road, just outside of Dewey Beach, will again feature not only plenty of skimming and skim lessons for those new to the sport, but plenty of family-fun beach games, lunch catered by Bethany Blues, and chances for prizes and giveaways, all while supporting the cause.
“Each year’s it’s gotten a little bit bigger and more participants. It’s a great day to hang out with your family at this event, too,” said Carolynn Vogel, who founded the Get Well Gabby Foundation in honor of her daughter Gabby Vogel, who passed away at the age of 5 after a battle with cancer.
To lend both a hand and a board to new skimmers signed up to learn the ropes, RELYance Skim Camp pros and brothers Dave and Tom Bracht will also be back again this year with 30 boards from Exile skimboards to share and demo.
“They’re just so fantastic,” said Vogel of teaming back up with the Bracht bros. “They’re such great role models for the kids in this community. We’re just so lucky that we ended up meeting them. It’s been a great collaboration.”
Two instructional sessions will be held, from 10 a.m. to noon before a break for lunch, and afternoon session from 1 to 3 p.m., with families welcome to watch and experienced skimmers welcome to join in on the fun as well.
Other activities set for the day include beach games and a raffle, with chances to win prizes from Atlantic Shoals Surf Shop and a brand new skimboard from Exile for top fundraisers amongst the experienced skimmers.
“I think it’s really cool how the kids are helping to raise the money to help other kids — it’s not just the parents,” said Dave Bracht. “That’s always something that we try to promote, too, so we’re excited to be able to help out any way we can.”
“It’s so much fun,” added local skimboarder and 2016 Skim A Thon participant Jack Lee. “I honestly think that everyone should come out and check it out.”
Skim A Thon will be held on the beach in front of Tower Road at the Delaware State Park outside of Dewey Beach on Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-up registration will be offered on the morning of the event, but skimmers were being encouraged to sign up in advance.
