Bert M. West, 75, of Kalamazoo, Mich., and formerly of Laurel, Del., passed away on Aug. 1, 2017, after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born in Laurel, Del., on Dec. 1, 1941, son of the late I. Lee West and Sara (McGee) West.
West was a building contractor for many years. However, his greatest calling in life was as the “Tract Man,” giving out his homemade tracts (pamphlets) about God’s love and plan for salvation to anyone who would receive it. West taught Sunday-school for 27 years at Kings United Methodist Church in Laurel, Del. He was also a long-time member of The Gideons International, an organization that places Bibles in hotel rooms and distributes them all around the world.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Otwell, Ben and Ken, and his sister, Karen Joseph. He is survived by his four children, Wanda West and her husband, David, of Laurel, Melissa Culver and her husband, Ron, of Dagsboro, Del., Michael West and his wife, Vanessa, of Kalamazoo, and Matthew West of Galveston, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Ryan, Rachel, Jenna, Jason, Aaron, Tyler, Veronica, Lauren, Mikaela and Ethan; his brother Jack West; his sister
Roslyn West; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service was scheduled for Aug. 13, 2017, at Bethel Worship Center, Seaford, Del., officiated by the Rev. Joe LeCates. Interment was to follow in Kings United Methodist Church Cemetery. Arrangements were by Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home Laurel, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial donations be made to The Gideons International.
